Special Olympics Fun Day, Thursday, May 3, Tyler Bend–Volunteer Opportunity
May 3 @ 9:00 am - 1:00 pm
Buffalo National River has hosted Special Olympics Fun Day events twice a year since 2016, one in May, the other in late September or early October. Partnering with Area 2 Special Olympics, this event brings athletes from Baxter, Marion, Searcy, Newton, Boone, and Carroll counties to Tyler Bend in the park’s middle district where they engage in a variety of activities including a scavenger hunt, Frisbee golf, bocce ball, and a softball throw, street dancing, followed by a picnic lunch. The teams meet at 9 am and quickly disperse to their activities until lunch at 11:30. The spring event typically serves about 200 participants while the fall event closer to 300.
The event has been sponsored through a grant from the National Park Foundation is now seeking support from local donors. The main cost associated with Fun Day is the lunch provided by a local business, which can run up to $2,000, depending on the number of participants. All other support is through NPS staff and volunteer organizations such as Buffalo National River Partners, Bergman High School, Boone County Special Services, and of course the many family and friends of the athletes themselves.
If you would like to donate to Special Olympics Fun Day, please send your check to Buffalo National River Partners, P.O. Box 1914, Harrison, AR 72602. Please note on your check that the donation is for Special Olympics Fun Day.
